Ah, the first day of school — a mix of excitement, nervousness, and perhaps even a few tears (from parents and child). It’s a milestone that marks the beginning of a new chapter filled with adventures, challenges, and endless growth opportunities.
Twelve years ago, I was in your shoes, experiencing the same mix of emotions and excitement as my child began their schooling journey.
Looking back on that time, I felt like I had to pass on some tips for parents whose kids have just started school.
As parents, we want our kids to feel ready, sure of themselves, and excited about this big step. But let’s admit it, dealing with the ups and downs of the first day of school can feel a bit like riding a rollercoaster blindfolded.
Tips for Parents
How your little ones handle it mostly depends on how you, as parents, paint the picture. Here are some fun tips to help you and your child make the most of this big day.
- Keep them informed about their school schedules. Knowing when their school day starts and ends will give them a sense of security.
- Talk to your child about their feelings. Understand their mix of excitement and nerves about starting school. Address their concerns and highlight this milestone in their growth.
- Take a few trips to the school beforehand. The adjustment phase becomes much smoother if your child gets familiar with the school environment before classes begin. Encourage them to interact with their future classmates, explore the spaces, and meet the teachers in advance. (during POP session).
- Check with your child about their emotions. Understand both their excitement and worries about starting school. Address their concerns and emphasize that it’s a big step in their growth.
- Assure them of your constant support. Reassure your child that you’re always there for them, ready to help with any difficulties.
If you see me near a bus stand standing around all confident while you’re stressing out, let me drop a truth bomb: I still have those days when I mess up as a parent.
Prepare your first day’s routine in advance
To make this family experience more pleasant and easy, get up with enough time to do everything calmly. Rushing the kids to their first day of school will just crank up their anxiety levels.
Don’t be alarmed if tears come
It is completely normal for the little ones to shed some tears when they see you walk away. Give them the peace of mind of knowing that you will be back for them in a couple of hours and that everything will be fine.
Make sure they get enough rest
Starting this new routine can be quite tiring for your children initially. It’s important to let them nap when they get home and monitor their rest habits closely, ensuring they’re in great condition for each school day ahead.
Celebrate Small Victories
On the big day itself, be sure to celebrate every small victory along the way. From getting dressed in their new school uniform to bravely stepping through the classroom door, each moment is a triumph worth celebrating.
Click some photos, give plenty of high-fives, hugs & kisses, and maybe even indulge in a post-school treat (ice cream, anyone?).
Acknowledging and celebrating these small victories will boost your child’s confidence and create cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
First day jitters, giggles and grins,
Parents with coffee, children in spins.
Backpacks too big, shoes that squeak,
Off to new adventures, let's take a peek!
* squeak: a short, high-pitched sound or cry.
Wrap up
The first day of school may be filled with twists and turns, but with a little preparation, a lot of love, and a sprinkle of fun, it can also be a magical adventure for parents and children alike.
So embrace the excitement, conquer those first-day jitters, and prepare for a journey filled with laughter, learning, and endless possibilities. After all, the best is yet to come!
Great tips, Anjali. I was in the same shoes 12 odd years ago and my daughter still cried when she went to grade 1. After a while it got annoying but we still tried to comfort her in the best way possible.
Starting school can be daunting, but embracing it as a challenge can make the experience exciting for both kids and parents. Here’s to a successful first day!
