Finding Peace In The Rain: Memories

Finding Peace In The Rain: Memories

Have you ever pondered the incredible ability of rain to soothe our senses and calm our minds? It enchants us with its petrichor, refreshes the air, brightens our monotonous cities, and frequently leads us to that peaceful, almost magical contemplation in which we contact ourselves via the raindrops…

I came across one interesting fact, many people dealing with high anxiety levels can find a sense of calm through the soothing effect of rain. When raindrops fall, they create a comforting “white noise” that consists of constant and calming sound waves. This sound has a therapeutic effect on many individuals.

In fact, a study supports the idea that the sound of rain can reduce agitation in elderly people in care homes by as much as 23%. Not only does this regular sound help calm restlessness, but it also has the power to unlock many memories within us.

Paper Boat Flashbacks

Rain has this incredible power to transport us to a realm of nostalgic bliss, reminding us of the simple yet magical moments we treasured as kids.

Finding Peace In The Rain

Remember those rainy afternoons when we would fashion little boats out of newspapers and set them sailing down the water-filled gutters? The anticipation, the excitement, and the pure joy of watching our paper vessels conquer the small rapids!

We would carefully craft our boats, folding the paper with the utmost care, and release them with bated breath. Those tiny sailors carried our dreams, and we followed their every move, eyes wide with wonder. It’s a memory that warms our hearts to this day.

Down the memory lane

As I watch my little girl gleefully dance in the rain, her tiny hands gripping an umbrella, a wave of nostalgia washes over me. This magical moment transports me back to my own childhood, where raindrops acted as a gateway to a world brimming with enchantment and sparked the most extraordinary adventures.

Do you remember the amazing adventures you had while holding onto your colourful and reliable shields? Walking in the rain turned into a magnificent escapade as if we were characters in our very own epic tale.

Every step we took seemed to dance with the raindrops, creating a beautiful harmony of childhood imagination. With our umbrellas, we became daring explorers, fearlessly venturing into unknown lands while staying cosy and dry. The stories we created under those magical canopies will always remain etched in our memories.

Rainy day feast

And what could be more delightful than the aroma of pakoras and samosas wafting from the kitchen. Our mom would don her apron and work her magic, conjuring up crispy treats to complement the rhythmic pitter-patter outside.

While we indulged in puddle-jumping and rain-soaked adventures, she would craft culinary wonders, adding a sprinkle of love to each bite. Those rainy day feasts shared with laughter and soggy clothes are a delicious memory etched forever in our taste buds.

  1. The memories of rain in my childhood are nostalgic and enchanting. Sailing the paper boats in the street we lived in, getting drenched totally during the first rain of the season. The aroma of roasted corn and pakoras brought about closeness and togetherness. Sound of rain is truly therapeutics. There are audios on YouTube with the sound of the rain.

  2. Truly, raindrops are like little rebels. They remind me of Jagjit Singh’s ghazal..yeh kagaz ki kashti… And it also reminds me that I haven’t seen any paper boats sailing in the rain since long. We used to love eating jalebis and pakoras. Now, as we age, we enjoy the fragrance and the sound.

The one thing that comes to my mind when I think of rains is the sound of rainfall on the tin roof in my maternal home.
I don’t like the rains Anjali. The pleasant things you’ve written about and the nostalgic memories could have been applicable if I had spent my childhood in a place like Bangalore cuz I do like watching the rain from my 14th floor balcony. But in my hometown it rains n rains incessantly for months with no respite. We don’t see the sun for days. There are landslides everywhere, power cuts for days and clothes don’t dry. So I am scared of the monsoons. However, now that I spend my monsoons here, I do make onion pakoras when I m in the rain mood sometimes.

  4. Rains in North India are nothing less than a celebration after months of scorching heat and not to forget it is also the paddy sowing season. You rekindled old memories when Rains would mean rubber shoes, splashing in the water , paper boats and maa ke hath ke pakore.

    1. can’t agree more. The slow silver lining of the water drops is therapeutic to watch. I love the rain, book and cup of coffee.

  5. Tip tip tap tap…..what a beautiful mesmerizing sound to make me feel divine… the essence of the soil when the first drop rain falls on it… uff I feel nostalgic. I fell like a drenched peacock dancing in the rain… that special kichri of Gobindobhog rice and Omlette with other fries …. just yum. Rain encourages my poetic soul to write more and its true as I find a rhythm in it. These days I am introducing rain to my son as its his first rain… his smile watching the rain drops falling on his hand, his giggling sound mixed with tip tip tap tap… Uff i experience the true peace in my life

  6. We used to go for rides on the scooter in the rain tagging the kids along when we were younger. Now I am too old for it 😉 But I still love rains.

  7. After the rain, everything looks so green and alive and cleansed. I have hydrophobia & don’t enjoy getting wet in the rain. But I love walking right after….I grew up in the lush IISc campus and it was extra magical and green after a shower. I love the smell and soothing sound of the light rain.

  8. I love rains. Even after living for 3 years in a place where it would rain 8 months in a year and non-stop for 3-4 days. My favorite memories are playing in the rain as kids. Paperboats and all.

  9. My best memory was when I walked in the rain for quite a distance and got fully drenched. The feeling of happiness is fresh in my memory…otherwise, as kids, we were never allowed to step out in the rain. 🙂

  10. Rain brings us some really beautiful memories indeed. Be it paper boats or pakoda and chai, it’s an enjoyable experience. Although I have to say, if I have to go out, rain makes me anxious. I am not getting drenched in the rain person, I have always fallen sick, so I dread it now. And Delhi NCR gets absolutely flooded from a single day of heavy rains, that makes me super stressed, if I have an errand to do or a commitment to go somewhere.

I am welcoming the rains here in Delhi with all my heart! What a respite during the scorching summer heat! But it breaks my heart to see how it is affecting the people in Kerala with heavy rains and floods. That said, rains bring such a treasure trove of memories. I loved the ones you shared.

  12. In Mumbai it had been raining for quite sometime now, but again if you see Haridwar, Manali people are affected. I no doubt love rain but somewhere people are suffering due to it and it hurts me.

  13. The pitter-patter is a completely different feeling, one can fall in love with it and just let themselves soak in water.

  14. I love rain and am a pluviophile. Rain doesn’t only evoke my long-lost emotions but also makes my dreams come alive. Recently I was traveling by train and humming a song of rain. It felt really good.

  15. Well, I’m Varsha and it had rained the day I had born so I have a close connect with rains. I love how the landscape is lush green and the air is so refreshing during this time. Dad used to tak us to impromptu trips to Mhaismal and Ellora so we could enjoy the beauty of nature while we enjoyed chai and pakode on the way. Really fond memories!
